Wayne Rooney, Tom CleverlyWayne Rooney joined select company Thursday and reminded us why he’s one of the greatest goal scorers in Premier League history.

The Manchester United star spearheaded his team’s 3-2 comeback victory over Hull City by setting up two goals and scoring one — a perfectly struck volley into the top corner of the net.

In the 26th minute, Hull City defender Curtis Davies blocked Rooney’s attempted through-ball, so Rooney dealt with the situation himself. He controlled the ball with his thigh and thundered it out of the air from 20 yards out. The audacious shot flew past the outstretched arm of Hull City goalkeeper Allan McGregor and into the goal, tying the score at 2.

“The ball’s bounced nicely for me and I’ve had a go,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “It was a good goal for us at a good time of the game.”

The goal was Rooney’s ninth of the 2013-14 Premier League season. It also was his 150th Premier League goal for Manchester United, making Rooney and former Arsenal hero Thierry Henry the only players to reach that mark with one team. Rooney joined United from Everton in 2004 and has become a club legend.

It all was part of a busy day for the 28-year-old England international. He was involved in all three of the Red Devils’ goals in their victory, which moved United up to seventh in the Premier League standings.

Rooney was out of favor at United earlier this year, but goals and milestones like these have restored his status as the Red Devils’ leading man. It’s no wonder why United is ready to offer him a new contract and build its medium-term future around him.
