Alex Rodriguez has a chance to get back into baseball. It’s just not the level of baseball he’d probably prefer.
The Torrington Titans of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League announced Thursday that they are willing to offer an assistant coaching job to the suspended New York Yankees third baseman, promising him a modest salary and free baked goods.
“We can offer him $5,000 for the season,” Titans general manager Joey Abis told The Register Citizen. “The Donut Station has offered him free coffee and donuts for the entire summer.”
Titans manager Dan McNamara, who envisions Rodriguez as more of a hitting coach, said the job offer is a display of goodwill to a player who, on top of being suspended for the entire 2014 season, has lost even the support of the players’ union.
“To be honest there is a lot of bad going on in his life,” McNamara said, “and we’re trying to give him some good.”
Though this offer is likely no more than a publicity stunt, Torrington has had some quality players pass through its program. Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Stasburg played for the suburban Connecticut club in the summer of 2007, two years before being selected No. 1 overall in the MLB draft.
