The Miami Heat were honored at the White House for the second consecutive year, and they had a unique gift for the Commander in Chief.
The two-time defending NBA champions debuted their “nickname” uniforms in Friday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets, and they evidently saved one for President Barack Obama.
It’s customary for champions visiting the White House to present the President with a personalized jersey, but the one that Chris Bosh and Ray Allen gave Obama on Tuesday read “POTUS” — the traditional abbreviation for President of the United States.
Obama cracked a few jokes during his speech honoring the Heat, relating their run to back-to-back NBA titles to his own run to consecutive terms in the White House.
“This group has now won twice, but it’s gone to the Finals three times and, sometimes, it feels like they’re still fighting for a little respect,” Obama said, via The Associated Press. “I can relate to that.”
Obama, a Chicago native and an avid basketball fan, concluded his address by wishing LeBron James & Co. good luck in the rest of the season — “unless they’re playing the Bulls.”
