Some considered Corey Crawford to be a candidate for Team Canada’s third goalie spot. That job, however, went to Mike Smith, leaving Crawford to wait another four years for his next chance.
He’s handling that snub pretty well so far, if Saturday night is any indication. That’s when the Chicago Blackhawks netminder, playing in his hometown of Montreal on Hockey Night in Canada, made his claim for the save of the season.
Montreal’s Lars Eller looked all but certain to score a relatively easy put-back goal on a breakaway. Crawford, who had lost his stick, already had made one save, but the second-chance opportunity from Eller was pegged for the back of the net. That’s when Crawford stacked his pads and made a ridiculous save.
