Deion Sanders says it’s a “prime time” to pay David Ortiz.
Sanders, appearing on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Mazz on Wednesday, insisted that the Boston Red Sox should give a new contract to Ortiz, who is seeking an extension.
“Why can’t you guys just sign [Ortiz]?” Sanders asked hosts Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti.
Felger replied, “Because he’s 47 years old!”
Felger, of course, was joking, as Ortiz, who is under contract for 2014, will turn 39 next offseason. Sanders doesn’t see why Ortiz’s age should even be an issue, though, as the slugger has continued to produce in recent years.
“We should never question the man until there is something there to question,” Sanders said. “Never say anything about a man’s age until he shows you he can’t produce. He’s great for the community. He’s great for the team. So, what’s the problem?”
Ortiz turned heads Sunday when he said he would consider playing for another organization if the Red Sox don’t offer him the contract extension he wants. The nine-time All-Star clarified his comments Wednesday, telling WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford that he’s looking for a one-year extension, not “anything crazy.”
