Remember when Don Mattingly was on the managerial hot seat?
Mattingly has agreed to a contract extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne. The exact terms of the extension are unknown, but Shelburne reports that it covers the next three seasons.
Mattingly’s Dodgers got off to a slow start in 2013, which led to speculation about whether Los Angeles would consider making a midseason managerial change. The Dodgers turned their season around, though, finishing the year with a 92-70 record and an 11-game advantage in the National League West.
The Dodgers eventually lost to the Cardinals in the NLCS, but Mattingly’s 2014 contract option vested with Los Angeles’ victory over Atlanta in the NLDS. Mattingly expressed frustration during a press conference after the season, as he was unhappy with having to manage the 2013 season without assurances that he would retain his job moving forward.
The Dodgers reportedly initiated contract talks shortly after Mattingly expressed his displeasure, and FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported Monday that the two sides were closing in on a deal. Mattingly has been at the helm in L.A. since 2011, when he replaced Joe Torre.
