Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban plays the game with a bit of a flare, and when you combine that with his ability to agitate, he can certainly get under the skin of his opponents.
Subban has already irked the Ottawa Senators with his postgame celebration after scoring a game-winning goal earlier this week, and then the Toronto Maple Leafs were the ones having to deal with Subban on Saturday night. Specifically, it was Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk who was the one being annoyed by the Habs blue liner.
The two went back and forth all night with some chippy play both in and behind the play. So when van Riemsdyk potted the eventual game-winning goal late in the third period, he decided to rub it in just a little bit more. The UNH product grabbed the crest of his sweater and tugged at it, an obvious mocking of Subban’s celebration from the game-winner against Ottawa.
“I’m usually not one to engage in stuff like that, but I was a little bit fired up,” van Riemsdyk said after the game, according to TSN.ca. “It just kind of happened.”
The Toronto forward also admitted that Subban’s chirping of the Maple Leafs bench during the game helped lead to the mocking celebration.
