Justin MastersonThe Boston Red Sox haven’t made much noise this offseason. But the hot stove might heat up next winter.

The Red Sox likely will enter the 2015 offseason with plenty of money to spend, if they so choose. While Boston certainly will look to lock up their own players, most notably Jon Lester and David Ortiz, the club also might decide to be active in free agency.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has been very disciplined thus far when it comes to handing out big contracts, and the most likely scenario is that he’ll continue to operate in such a manner. There are some interesting players set to hit the open market next offseason, though, so the Red Sox absolutely could open up the checkbook to load up for another World Series run.

Some players slated to hit free agency following the 2014 season, including Max Scherzer and Hanley Ramirez, are candidates for contract extensions, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll re-sign with their current clubs. Money talks, and testing free agency is very enticing for star players. Boston also represents a desirable destination for players, so expect the Red Sox to be linked to just about every free agent next winter.

Now, this list is based solely on speculation, and team needs/strengths could change over the next few months. But here are 10 players who the Red Sox, theoretically, could pursue in free agency next winter.
