1389660499_kenKen Whisenhunt has accepted an offer to become the Tennessee Titans’ next head coach, the team announced Monday.

The hiring comes less than 24 hours after Whisenhunt, the Chargers’ offensive coordinator in 2013, watched his season come to an end as San Diego fell to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round.

Whisenhunt replaces Mike Munchak, who was fired by the Titans on Jan. 3 after three seasons with the team.

Whisenhunt, 51, was expected to land with the Detroit Lions, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport even tabbed him as the “clear front-runner” for that head coaching vacancy, but in a somewhat surprising move, Whisenhunt will be heading to Tennessee.

Whisenhunt brings six years of head coaching experience to his new gig. The former Cardinals coach went 45-51 in Arizona and led the team to the franchise’s first and only Super Bowl appearance in 2009.
