San Diego Chargers defensive back Marcus Gilchrist exited Sunday’s divisional matchup against the Denver Broncos after taking a brutal hit to the head.

During the fourth quarter, Gilchrist and teammate Reggie Walker collided violently while attempting to bring down Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker. The helmet-to-helmet collision was so forceful that paint chips from Gilchrist’s headgear flew into the air as the two crashed into one another.

Gilchrist stayed down on the field for several moments before finally being helped to the sideline by the Chargers’ medical staff.
