D’oh.

That might have been what New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston was thinking or saying in the final seconds of his team’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday afternoon as he completed one of the season’s most unintelligent plays.

The Saints, trailing 23-15, recovered an onside kick in the game’s final moments, then started moving the ball down field for a potential game-tying touchdown when Drew Brees found Colston on the sideline with about 8 seconds left. Conventional wisdom said Colston should have stepped out of bounds and given the Saints one more chance from about the Seattle 40-yard line.

Colston had a different idea.

The Hofstra alum instead tried to throw the ball across the field to Travaris Cadet as part of one final razzle-dazzle play. It was a forward pass rather than a backward lateral. That’s illegal, of course, and a flag was thrown and a penalty was called. The infraction came with a 10-second runoff, which was moot anyway as time would have expired when Colston decided to not step out of bounds.
