Michael Vick: ‘I Want To Start’ In 2014, ‘Can’t See Myself As A Backup’

michael vickRather than being the centerpiece of Chip Kelly’s new offense, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick spent the majority of this season on the bench, watching Nick Foles lead his team to the playoffs.

Vick’s time in Philly is now over — he hit free agency at season’s end — but he says he’s not ready to take on a limited role elsewhere.

“Listen,” Vick told 97.5 The Fanatic’s Mike Missanelli, via Eagledelphia. “I want to start. I want to play. I want to be a starter in this league, and I just can’t see myself as a backup. Maybe down the road that would be a possibility, but not right now.”

Vick will likely have a number of suitors in free agency, but he said he’s only interested in teams that could offer him a starting job.

“As of right now, yeah,” he said. “I just feel like I’ve got a lot to offer. I feel like I could be an asset to somebody’s team and I feel like I can help a ballclub around this league. I don’t want to sit there and be a waste of talent and I feel like I’d be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t pursue [a starting job].”

Vick played in seven games this season, completing 54.6 percent of his passes for 1,215 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
