Five Boston Red Sox players filed for arbitration Tuesday.
Mike Carp, Junichi Tazawa, Andrew Miller, Burke Badenhop and Jonathan Herrera were among the 146 Major League Baseball players who filed Tuesday. Each player and MLB team must submit salary figures Friday, and arbitration hearings will begin Feb. 1 for any players still unsigned.
It’s possible that each of the Red Sox players who filed for arbitration could reach a contract agreement before the hearings begin. If the two sides cannot agree to a deal, an arbitration panel will select either the team’s proposed salary or the player’s proposed salary. Typically, only a handful of arbitration cases end with an actual hearing.
The good news for the Red Sox is that each player is under team control for 2014. The arbitration process simply determines each filing player’s salary for the upcoming season. Both service time and performance are factored into the arbitration process.
MLB Trade Rumors projects that Carp will earn $1.3 million through arbitration, Tazawa $1.1 million, Miller $1.9 million, Badenhop $2.1 million and Herrera $1.2 million.
