The Miami Dolphins expected Mike Wallace to improve their passing game this season, but things didn’t work out exactly as they planned.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill progressed throughout the course of his sophomore season, but Wallace didn’t produce as expected in his first year in Miami, catching just 73 passes for 930 yards and five touchdowns in his first season — numbers that aren’t exactly worthy of the $60 million contract he received last offseason.
Wallace wasn’t happy with his production on the season, but he seems to believe the Dolphins’ offense could have been much better if they found him deep more often.
“We have to,” Wallace said, per the Miami Herald. “Definitely have got to get the deep ball going. That’s the difference between winning and losing a couple games. I should have had 15 or 20 more touchdowns. And that’s being modest. If you press me, you have no shot to cover me. Once I get you to stop your feet, it’s over.”
Catching 15 more touchdowns is a pretty unrealistic expectation, especially when Tannehill was completing barely more than 60 percent of his passes on the season, However, Wallace certainly has the speed and the hands to haul in more catches and touchdowns next season, but any hope of chasing Randy Moss’ NFL record of 23 touchdown receptions lies on Tannehill’s shoulders.
