The Baltimore Orioles have signed outfielder Delmon Young to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, the team announced Monday.
The free agent, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft, batted .260 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs in 108 games with two teams last season. After being released by the Philadelphia Phillies in August, Young was picked up by the Tampa Bay Rays later that month.
The 28-year-old will likely compete for playing time at the designated hitter spot and in left field. CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that if Young makes the team, his deal will be worth $1 million, with the chance to make an additional $750,000 in incentives.
The Orioles also are interested in outfielder Jack Cust, who along with Young was invited to the Orioles’ minicamp this week. The 35-year-old last played in the majors in 2011, when he hit .213/.344/.329 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 67 games with the Seattle Mariners. Cust spent the 2012 season in Triple-A, splitting time between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees organizations.
