David Moyes bears great responsibility for Manchester United’s current woes, and it’s up to him to fix the situation.
United manager Moyes will control the club’s transfer policy in the current transfer window, according to the Telegraph. Club bosses granted him the power to identify which players to buy and sell players in an effort to save United’s season.
“David Moyes has been given free rein to dictate Manchester United’s transfer business this month, with the Old Trafford hierarchy handing the manager sole charge of club funds in an attempt to avoid a disastrous failure to qualify for the Champions League,” the report says.Â
“Although the Glazers [Manchester United’s owners] back Moyes’s determination to target only top players with a long-term value to the club, the Americans have made it clear that no restrictions will be placed on his recruitment plans should he identify players he deems capable of improving his squad.”
United has struggled under Moyes since he succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager last summer. The Red Devils sit in seventh place in the Premier League after 20 games — a far cry from the lofty standard of last season when they won the league title by some distance. Swansea City compounded United’s woes Sunday by eliminating it from the FA Cup (in the third round) with a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
With United’s hopes of defending last season’s title on life support, Moyes and club directors have lowered their targets and taken aim at a top-four finish and deep runs in the League Cup and Champions League. Trailing fourth-place Liverpool by five points, United hopes to revive its flagging fortunes by backing Moyes with substantial transfer funds and total control over their use.
