Josh McDaniels will have other things on his mind besides the New England Patriots’ offense this weekend.
The Patriots’ offensive coordinator will interview for the Cleveland Browns’ head-coaching vacancy Saturday somewhere in New England, according to ESPN.com. The Patriots are the AFC’s No. 2 playoff seed, so they have a bye this week.
The Browns can interview McDaniels, but they cannot offer him a job or discuss contract negotiations, per league rules. Sunday is the last day assistant coaches on teams with playoff byes can interview for open jobs.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said Wednesday that he’s not surprised McDaniels is drawing interest for head-coaching jobs.
“No, I’m not surprised by much anymore in the NFL,” Brady said. “He’s a great coach, and I said the other day, he’s one of my best buds, and I’ve been around a long time, so I know him pretty well. I’m glad he’s my coach.”
The Browns also are interested in Auburn head coach Guz Malzahn and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. The Plain Dealer reports that the Browns interviewed Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and are interested in Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.
