The Boston Red Sox certainly have been keeping an eye on the Asian pitching market.
The Red Sox and Minnesota Twins are interested in Korean pitcher Suk-Min Yoon, according to Peter Gammons. Yoon, who is a Scott Boras client, has spent his professional career pitching for the Kia Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization.
Yoon has been both a starter and a reliever during his pro career. His best season came in 2011, when the right-hander went 17-5 with a 2.45 ERA in 27 appearances (23 starts) and won MVP honors. The 27-year-old dealt with a shoulder injury in 2013.
MLB Trade Rumors’ Tim Dierkes reports that Yoon throws a low-90s fastball and was considered the second-best pitcher in the Korea Baseball Organization behind Hyun-jin Ryu before Ryu joined the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason. Ryu went 14-8 with a 3.00 ERA in 30 starts in his first season in Major League Baseball.
The Red Sox, who signed Japanese pitcher Shunsuke Watanabe to a minor-league contract in December, reportedly invited fellow Japanese hurler Hideyoshi Otake to minor-league spring training earlier this week.
