The Washington Redskins hired a new head coach, and there’s no guarantee that Robert Griffin III will be happy with the move.
Griffin, who has reportedly bragged to teammates about his influence over the future of the Redskins, had no involvement in the team’s recent coaching search or the decision to hire new head coach Jay Gruden, according to Pro Football Talk.
The Skins came to an agreement with Gruden early on Thursday morning and are set to introduce the new head coach at a press conference on Thursday afternoon. Gruden, who was the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator for the last three seasons, runs a very prototypical pro-style offense and has never been a proponent of the read-option, even convincing Bengals owner Mike Brown to draft Andy Dalton instead of Colin Kaepernick in 2011.
Griffin, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft and has developed a close relationship with owner Dan Snyder, is the Redskins’ franchise quarterback and is expected to be the focal point of the offense for at least the near future. Although, 2012 fourth-round pick Kirk Cousins started the final three games of the regular season and has shown flashes of brilliance when given the chance to play.
While Griffin may not have been involved in the interview or selection process, his presence as the team’s quarterback was likely a major conversation with every candidate. So, the 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year should have no worries about his future with the franchise or any potential relationship hiccups with Gruden.
