Puntin’ ain’t easy.

Just ask Ryan Allen, who was pummeled during a punt attempt in the New England Patriots’ AFC divisional-round playoff game Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

Allen was set to punt the ball out of Patriots territory in the second quarter when he watched Danny Aiken‘s long snap sail over his head and toward the New England end zone. Allen raced to scoop up the loose ball, but before he could advance it to a teammate, he was met by a herd of Indianapolis Colts special-teamers. Allen fumbled the ball out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a Colts safety that cut the Patriots’ lead to 21-12.

Kicker Stephen Gostkowski took over punting duties, as it appeared Allen suffered an upper-body injury during the play. The Patriots later announced Allen had injured his shoulder.
