Tom BradyThe New Year is a time for reflection. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to look ahead.

While 2013 provided plenty of memorable sports moments, there’s no telling what 2014 will bring. It’s safe to assume, however, that we’re in store for another eventful 365 days, although the possibilities of what “eventful” means are endless.

Predictions are always a fun way to mark the New Year, mainly because they often end up being so wrong. As such, we’re able to laugh — sometimes hysterically — at ourselves months down the road. Even when we’re correct in our predictions, it’s usually the product of chance rather than some crystal ball steering us in the right direction.

For a glimpse of just how difficult it is to predict sports storylines, one must not look any further than the 2013 Red Sox, who defied the odds with an incredible worst-to-first turnaround. Sure, there were some faithful optimists who foresaw an epic return to glory, but most “experts” expected another down year for Boston, even after general manager Ben Cherington revamped the roster.

Who will be this year’s Red Sox? Who will shock us, please us, disappoint us or simply capture our attention? It’ll be months before we have an exact answer, but let’s take a whack right now at predicting the sports world in 2014.
