Just call it a spirited battle of the sexes.
The U.S. women’s hockey team’s preparation for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, is in full swing, but instead of practicing against squads its own size (and gender), Team USA has been scrimmaging against high school boys hockey teams across the Northeast for the last few weeks.
Team USA is ranked No. 1 in the world, but that didn’t stop the boys team from The Taft School in Watertown, Conn., from stepping up to the challenge. Team USA won 2-1 in overtime but dropped a 3-1 decision against the Salisbury School in Salisbury, Conn.
Next up, Team USA will take on Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, Mass., at 3 p.m. Sunday, with just a few weeks remaining until opening ceremonies for the 2014 Olympic Games.
The US women’s team features five Massachusetts natives on its roster, including Molly Schaus, Kacey Bellamy, Michelle Picard, Alex Carpenter and Meghan Duggan.
