Football fans hadn’t seen a true beating in the Super Bowl in over a decade, but the Denver Broncos certainly got a whooping on Sunday.
The Seattle Seahawks threw down the gloves and knocked the Broncos around pretty much from start to finish on Sunday, forcing four turnovers en route to a 43-8 win (third-largest margin in Super Bowl history). The loss was so bad, in fact, that Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie couldn’t help but attribute the loss to a good, old-fashioned beatdown by the Seahawks.
“We’ve got to give credit to Seattle, you could tell they wanted it way more than us,” Rodgers-Cromartie said, via The Denver Post. “They were not going to take a loss. They definitely came out and punched us around.”
The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead — the quickest in Super Bowl history — securing two points just 13 seconds into the game after Broncos center Manny Ramirez botched a snap over Peyton Manning’s head and into the back of the end zone. From there, Seattle piled on 34-more unanswered points. While the 35-point loss was certainly demoralizing for the AFC’s top team, DRC is using the embarrassing loss as motivation going forward.
“What you take out of this is you take that feeling of getting punched around twice by that team and work hard this offseason to come back stronger,” Rodgers-Cromartie added.
Cromartie’s motivation will be a good spark heading into next season, although, with free agency hanging overhead, he may be sporting those skills elsewhere come opening day 2014.
