Arsenal is never far from Cesc Fabregas’ thoughts, and the former Gunners captain weighed in on their title chances Wednesday.
Fabregas believes the Premier League leader Arsenal has what it takes to end its nearly nine-year trophy drought this season. Fabregas says consistency will be key to their hopes of winning silverware, according to the Mail.
“I watch every game of Arsenal’s,” Fabregas said. “I am very happy how they are playing, they have a strong squad, they are top of the league.
“I cannot wait to see if they can lift the trophy finally.
“It would be amazing, they need to be very consistent between now and the end of the season.”
Arsenal leads fellow challengers Manchester City and Chelsea by two points in the league standings with 14 games remaining. The Gunners also are still competing in this season’s FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
Arsenal’s grueling February schedule kicks off this weekend when it faces Liverpool at Anfield. It then hosts Manchester United on Feb. 12, Liverpool (in the 5th round of the FA Cup) on Feb. 16 and Bayern Munich (in the Champions League) on Feb. 19. The tough stretch of games will test Arsenal’s resilience, quality and depth as it looks to win its first trophy since the FA Cup in 2005.
Fabregas played played 303 games for Arsenal between 2003-11 and served as club captain for his last three seasons in North London. Fabregas then returned to his boyhood club, FC Barcelona, before the 2011-12 season.
Fabregas struggled to make an impact in his first two seasons at Barcelona, and rumors saying that he might return to the Premier League (at either Arsenal or Manchester United) were rife last summer. But Fabregas, now 26, is finally playing regular games this season, as new coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has depended on him more than predecessors Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova did.
However, Fabregas’ Barcelona commitments don’t prevent him from following his former team, as it chases glory in one of the most exciting and unpredictable Premier League seasons in recent memory. The Arsenal fan in him thinks the Gunners can win one of the three competitions but they must demonstrate that quality that all good teams have in abundance — consistency — to stand above other challengers at the end of the season.
