An athletic linebacker is officially on the open market for NFL teams.
Former CFL No. 1 overall pick Henoc Muamba has been released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to pursue an NFL career. Muamba was selected No. 1 overall in the 2011 CFL draft out of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
The Patriots worked out Muamba in December. He’s 6-foot, 230 pounds and ran a 4.72 40-yard dash and 6.72-second three-cone drill before the CFL draft. Muamba, born in Zaire, was named a CFL All-Star in 2013 and won the Lew Hayman Trophy, given to the best Canadian player in the East Division.
Muamba, 24, had 106 tackles, one sack and one interception for the Blue Bombers in 2013. In 2012, he had three sacks and 65 tackles.
The Patriots signed two former CFL players in 2013: linebacker Jason Vega, who was released in training camp, and defensive tackle Armond Armstead, who was placed on non-football injury/reserve after having surgery to clear an unspecified infection.
