Some insignificant little Super Bowl victory isn’t going to remove the “appetizer”-sized chip on Doug Baldwin’s shoulder.
The Seattle Seahawks wide receiver didn’t forget disparaging remarks that ESPN analyst Cris Carter made about him before Super Bowl XLVIII. Carter, a Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver, called Baldwin and fellow Seahawks wideout Jermaine Kearse “appetizers.”
Carter said after Sunday night’s Super Bowl that he called the receivers that because Seattle’s starters were injured. But Baldwin, who had five receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown in the Seahawks’ 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos, noticed that Carter doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring.
“If those guys would do their jobs, they would figure it out — not gonna say any names,” Baldwin said about Carter on FOX Sports Live. “I don’t think they’re any FOX affiliates. If they would also do their jobs further, they would see that we are the most efficient receiving corps in the NFL. My man said that we were appetizers. He told me to Google him. I saw that he was a Hall of Famer. I didn’t see any Super Bowl appearances. I would love to show him the Super Bowl ring, and if he doesn’t want to come and see it personally, tell him to Google it.”
Baldwin interrupted cornerback Richard Sherman’s news conference to jokingly call his teammate “mediocre.” Sherman responded by calling Baldwin “pedestrian” in jest.
“Our receivers were called pedestrian and appetizers,” Sherman said. “I think if anybody took a bite out of them, they’d be pretty full.”
Carter was shown Sherman and Baldwin’s comments, then went back into trash-talk mode from his playing days.
“They’re Super Bowl champions. They deserve that,” Carter said on SportsCenter. “It’s well beyond that. They need to be concerned with OTAs next year when he’s back to being the third or fourth guy. Congratulations tonight.”
Baldwin likely will remember those comments next season. He’ll be a restricted free agent this offseason.
