Jennifer Welter made history Saturday night by becoming the first female non-kicker to take a snap in a men’s professional football league.
Welter lined up at running back for the Indoor Football League’s Texas Revolution and carried the ball for a 1-yard loss inside the red zone. Welter was stopped by Cedric Hearvey, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive lineman.
Welter took two more carries near the goal line and couldn’t get in for the touchdown. She’s listed at 5-foot-2, 130 pounds.
The 36-year-old Welter played linebacker for the Women’s Football Alliance’s Dallas Diamonds before signing with the IFL. She’s not the first woman to lace it up in a men’s league, but she is the first to play a contact position.
