FORT MYERS, Fla. — Perhaps the most terrifying drill of Boston Red Sox spring training took place Monday.
Red Sox pitchers, including Jon Lester, John Lackey and Clay Buchholz, participated in a “rag ball” drill in the left field bullpen of one of Fenway South’s six fields. Pawtucket pitching coach Rich Sauveur and Portland pitching coach Bob Kipper were present for the drill, which involved pitchers facing comebackers in the form of line drives and ground balls at real speed.
The balls used for the drill were softer than a typical major league baseball, so there really wasn’t any danger involved. Plus, the pitchers were prepared for the comebackers, although that doesn’t make the concept of an object flying in your direction at a high velocity any less eye-opening.
The Red Sox had fun with the whole thing. Check it out in the video above.
