Matt Garza is a wealthy man.
A major league pitcher who’s enjoyed relative success with a couple of different teams, Garza was enjoying an anniversary with his wife in Turks and Caicos when the Los Angeles Angels called to make him a substantial offer: $52 million for four years of work.
Unfortunately for the Angels, they hadn’t counted on how serious Garza takes his vacation.
“They offered, but it was more of a weird situation,” Garza said to BrewersBeat. “It wasn’t anything big. It was an offer and I said, ‘I’m on vacation. I’m not thinking about baseball, dude. Me and my wife are enjoying ourselves.’”
Luckily for Garza, the Milwaukee Brewers came knocking with the biggest deal they’ve ever offered a free agent — four years, $50 million — and this time he wasn’t on vacation.
“I had no worries,” he said. “God’s going to make things work out either way. It is what it is. I guess you didn’t want me that bad, I take it. I found a team that wants me and makes me feel at home. I was looking for a great fit and I believe I found it.”
The $2 million discount he took to play for a team he believes wants him for his skills, not as a trading piece, probably doesn’t seem significant to Garza, but fans and families on winter vacations this week could certainly find some ways to spend the $2 million difference.
