The University of Missouri football team was honored for its Cotton Bowl victory Saturday night at a Tigers men’s basketball game, but one particular player received a lion’s share of the applause.

That player was Michael Sam, who was making his first appearance on the Columbia campus since announcing last weekend that he is gay. As Sam hoisted the Cotton Bowl trophy at halfcourt, the Mizzou faithful welcomed him back with a standing ovation.

“Because Michael Sam stood up for Mizzou his entire career and we need to stand up for him,” Mizzou fan Michelle Carmichael said, via The Associated Press.
