Bill Russell turned 80 years old on Wednesday, so the NBA threw him the biggest birthday bash ever.

OK, the big party in New Orleans this weekend was for NBA All-Star weekend, not for the sport’s greatest winner officially becoming an octogenarian. The 11-time champion and five-time league Most Valuable Player was in attendance, however, just a few days after his special day. Surrounded by some of the league’s current finest, Russell was honored in a manner hardly fit for a man of his stature.

A collection of All-Stars, led by Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, serenaded Russell with an off-key rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Russell appeared to enjoy it, which pretty much proves his hearing must be going. Anyway, the gesture was nice.
