Just as quickly as it seemed like the NBA was on board with a radical idea, the notion was squashed.
ESPN’s Tom Haberstroh reported Tuesday that in talking with NBA president of basketball operations Rob Thorn, the league executive revealed that the idea of implementing a 4-point shot had “come up” in league discussions. It turns out ESPN ran with a storyline that “doesn’t exist.”
“No one at the NBA, nor the competition committee, has had any serious conversations about increasing the size of the floor or adding a 4-point line,” NBA senior vice president Tim Frank said, via InsideHoops.com. “Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe were entertaining a line of questioning about out-of-the-box ideas, and ESPN.com chose to make a story that doesn’t exist.”
As much fun as it would be to have the NBA add another line on the hardwood and watch Steph Curry routinely take shots from halfcourt, the fans will have to wait.
