Real Sociedad’s Comical Own Goal Helps Barcelona In Copa del Rey (Video)

Enaut Zubikarai doesn’t get much playing time at Spanish soccer club Real Sociedad. Maybe bad luck has something to do with it.

Zubikarai scored one of the worst own goals in recent memory Wednesday in his team’s Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) semifinal defeat against Barcelona.

With his team down 1-0 in the 60th minute, Zubikarai watched as Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas made a perfect pass over the top of the Sociedad defense to teammate Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez’s left-footed shot beat Zubikarai but hit the post. Real Sociedad defender Gorka Elustondo got to the rebound first, but his clearance hit the unfortunately placed Zubikarai and went straight into the goal to make it 2-0.

Even the announcers had to chuckle at Zubikarai’s bad luck.

Barcelona went on to win the first leg of the two-game Copa del Rey semifinal series by that very score. The two teams will meet again Feb. 12 to decide who advances to the final.

Zubikarai probably will play in that game before returning to his normal duties — serving as the backup to Real Socied’s incumbent No. 1, Claudio Bravo.
