A little cold weather wasn’t going to stop Boston Red Sox fans Saturday.
A whole bunch of boisterous Red Sox fans braved the elements and showed up to Fenway Park on Saturday to send off the team’s equipment truck in style. The 53-foot truck, which was loaded in front of the group of passionate fans, departed Fenway for a 1,480-mile trek to the Red Sox’s spring training complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
The equipment truck was loaded with tons of equipment, including 20,400 baseballs, 1,100 bats and 60 cases of sunflower seeds, according to a press release. Obviously, it took some time to get everything loaded up, but Red Sox fans cheered, discussed the team’s 2014 outlook and enjoyed some musical entertainment despite temperatures dropping into the low 20s.
Truck Day marks the unofficial beginning of spring training, and serves as a reminder that baseball is just around the corner. Red Sox pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report in Fort Myers on Feb. 15, and the team’s first full-squad workout is scheduled for Feb. 20.
