The Derek Jeter farewell tour won’t be cheap.
The New York Yankees shortstop announced Wednesday that he’ll retire after the 2014 season, causing ticket prices for his team’s Sept. 26-28 series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park to soar, according to ESPN. If the Yankees fail to make the playoffs, those three games will be Jeter’s last as a major leaguer.
TiqIQ said the cheapest seat at Fenway jumped from $26 to more than $200 after the announcement was made, and the New York Daily News reported that someone is selling a ticket for Jeter’s final regular-season game (Sept. 28) for $11,000. That price also happens to be listed for both Opening Day and Jeter’s final regular-season game at Yankee Stadium.
“People bought what they could buy,” TiqIQ vice president for data Chris Matcovich told ESPN. “And then brokers started pulling their tickets so as not to sell their seats too cheaply.”
“The final series against the Yankees was too far away to think about this morning,” said Jim Holzman, CEO and president of Boston’s Ace Ticket. “Not now. We’re seeing action from people in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York.”
Ace Ticket raised bleacher seat prices from $129 to $249.
“We have this major rivalry, but there’s a lot of respect for a guy like Derek Jeter,” Holzman said. “People want to be there for this.
“Oh, it’s just starting,” he added. “Wait until people get home and hear it on the news and realize his last game is at Fenway.”
