The Cleveland Browns wanted to drag former New England Patriots head coach Bill Parcells out of retirement to run their organization.
The 72-year-old Parcells last served as vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins from 2008 to 2010. He resigned from that role in September 2010.
The Browns wanted Parcells to come out of retirement to run the team, although the role he would have filled is unknown, according to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report. Parcells has been an analyst for ESPN since leaving the NFL.

Freeman tweeted that he would post more details on his report later. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam fired general manager Michael Lombardi and CEO Joe Banner on Tuesday, and the Browns hired Ray Farmer as general manager. Banner will not be replaced as CEO.
Lombardi and Banner were hired last offseason. Head coach Rob Chudzinski, who was not hired by Lombardi and Banner, was fired after the Browns went 4-12 in 2013. Chudzinski was replaced by former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, who, of course, was not hired by Farmer. So the Browns could be going through this process again after the 2014 season.
