It is becoming more and more apparent that Martin St. Louis’ tenure with the Tampa Bay Lightning might be nearing its end.
Newsday’s Arthur Staple reported Wednesday that he has “heard from three different NHL people” that St. Louis requested a trade last month.
St. Louis confirmed he has met with Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, but he did not go into detail about what was discussed during the meeting.
“I’ve had conversations with Steve about my future with the team, and I’ll leave it at that,” St. Louis said, via Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune.
Yzerman also was the general manager of Team Canada, which won gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics last weekend. St. Louis was a late addition to the squad, replacing injured Lightning teammate Steven Stamkos.
Staple named the New York Rangers as a possible suitor for St. Louis, as the Blueshirts are reportedly keen on dealing forward and captain Ryan Callahan. Rangers GM Glen Sather has inquired about a potential St. Louis-for-Callahan deal, according to the New York Post’s Larry Brooks, but Yzerman reportedly has an “absolute lack of interest in dealing his leading scorer in exchange for a rental property.”
The NHL trade deadline is March 5.
