Report: Nicklas Backstrom Missed Gold Medal Game Over Banned Subtance Use

Nicklas backstromSweden fell to Canada in the gold medal game of the 2014 Winter Olympics men’s hockey tournament, and the Swedes did so without one of their stars.

Nicklas Backstrom wasn’t allowed to play in the biggest game of the tournament after testing positive for a banned substance, according to Yahoo! Sports. An NHLPA source said that Backstrom violated anti-doping rules after using an allergy medication.

Backstrom was pulled from the locker room before his team’s morning skate, after being listed in the starting lineup. The Washington Capitals center underwent a drug test Friday.

Backstrom was Sweden’s top line center in Sochi, with four assists in five games.
