Rodrigue Beaubois and the Boston Celtics might be hoping lightning strikes twice with a 10-day contract.
Beaubois and the Celtics have had discussions about the former Dallas Mavericks guard inking a short-term contract, ESPN.com’s Marc Stein reports. The injury-prone point guard is just 26 years old, creating hope that there is still time to resurrect his career.
Chris Johnson panned out after signing the same type of deal, earning a second 10-day contract and eventually signing with the Celtics through the end of the season. But Beaubois could have a harder road than Johnson. Chronic foot problems have sapped Beaubois of his once-trademark speed, and he has not appeared in an NBA game in almost a year. He briefly looked like a dynamic scoring guard in the making as a rookie in 2009-10, when he averaged 7.1 points in just 12.5 minutes per game.
Beaubois’ production decreased as his difficulties staying on the court increased, however. His per-minute scoring average has fallen in each of his four seasons in the NBA.
