Steve Elkington: PGA Tour Asked Me To Take Down Michael Sam Tweet

Former PGA Championship winner Steve Elkington was visited by the PGA Tour social media police Tuesday.

The 10-time Tour winner raised some eyebrows earlier in the day after he tweeted an apparent gay joke that was directed at NFL draft prospect Michael Sam. The joke badly backfired, and soon afterward, the tweet disappeared. The deletion might not have been Elkington’s choice, though, as he told Yahoo Sports’ Shane Bacon the Tour asked him to remove it.

The PGA Tour later released a statement:

“Under our regulations, conduct unbecoming a professional includes public commentary that is clearly inappropriate or offensive. With respect to this matter, and consistent with our longstanding policy, we do not comment on player disciplinary matters.”
