The 2014 Winter Olympics reached their conclusion Sunday, with the United States second in total medals won behind the host country, Russia.
Highlighting the games were a number of American performances that came from unexpected places — primarily some of the new events incorporated into the Olympics just this year.
While athletes like Shani Davis and Shaun White failed to accomplish what was expected of them, other Americans picked up their slack and climbed onto their respective podiums to receive their portion of Olympic glory.
