The United States sent its largest-ever team to the 2014 Winter Olympics, with 230 athletes representing Team USA in Sochi. Of those skilled competitors, however, a hefty chunk of them have come out of Vermont and New Hampshire.
Although California, Colorado and Minnesota can boast that they sent the most Olympians to Sochi, it is Vermont and New Hampshire that should really be bragging about the number of world-class athletes they produce when it comes to population size. According to Business Insider, one out of every 48,000 people that live in Vermont is on Team USA. New Hampshire comes in second, with one out of every 147,000 people donning the red, white and blue.
Vermont sent 13 athletes to Sochi, while New Hampshire sent nine, including the most decorated alpine skier in Olympic history, Bode Miller.
To put it in perspective, although California sent 20 athletes to the Winter Games, only 1 out of every 1.9 million people is on the team.
As for the rest of New England, Massachusetts was no slouch either, sending 10 Olympians to Sochi — including five members of the women’s hockey team. Maine and Rhode Island each yielded one athlete, while Jonathan Quick, Max Pacioretty and Kevin Shattenkirk are three of the eight Olympians to hail from Connecticut.
