Bobby Shea of the AHL’s Rockford Ice Hogs was a crazy man on Friday night, giving us one of the more surreal hockey scenes witnessed in a while.
The defenseman snapped during Rockford’s game with the Chicago Wolves on Friday night, when he put a questionable hit on Chicago’s Ty Rattie. The high hit didn’t sit well with Rattie, but before he had a chance to even say something, Shea dropped his gloves. The two then engaged in a quick scrap.
That’s where things got really interesting. There was under a minute to play in the period, so both players went back to their respective dressing rooms. Apparently Shea hadn’t had enough. The two players had to walk back down the same tunnel, and while there were police officers between the two players, Shea wouldn’t take no for an answer. So he got down on the floor and crawled underneath the grasp of the cops to get after Rattie.
The police quickly intervened before things could get too carried away, and that’s probably a good thing. Rattie was actually injured during the on-ice portion of the show and probably couldn’t do much to protect himself.
Shea ended up getting a 5-minute major for elbowing, a 5-minute major for fighting, a game misconduct for elbowing and a game misconduct for fighting off the playing surface. That’s two game misconducts and 30 minutes of penalty time all at once.
Oh, and Chicago went on to win 6-0.
UPDATE: Shea has been suspended eight games for his actions, the AHL announced Saturday night.
