Steve Donahue will not return as the men’s basketball head coach at Boston College next season, according to the university.

BC athletic director Brad Bates tweeted that he decided to go in a different direction with the team’s head coaching position.

Donahue was hired in 2010 by BC’s former athletic director after taking Cornell to the Sweet 16 that year. Cornell made the NCAA tournament in each of Donahue’s final three seasons, but he was unable to replicate those results at Chestnut Hill.

The Eagles have not gone to the NCAA tournament since Donahue took over for Al Skinner. BC went 8-23 this past season — 4-14 in ACC play and 54-76 in Donahue’s tenure.
