Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was proud of his team’s performance in Sunday’s victory over Manchester United, but he reserved special praise for captain Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard led the Reds to a 3-0 victory by scoring two goals from the penalty spot. His first gave Liverpool a lead in the 34th minute. The second came in the 46th minute and effectively sealed the result.
Rodgers told LiverpoolFC.com that Gerrard’s composure sets him apart from other players.
“It’s just a continuation of adjectives for Steven,” Rodgers said. “He’s a wonderful professional, peerless in many ways and an incredible captain for us. He’s just so focused and so calm under pressure. He was incredible.”
Gerrard could have added a third goal, but his 78th-minute penalty kick hit the post. The missed spot kick didn’t detract from a heroic all-around performance, though.
Gerrard, 33, has now scored 10 Premier League goals this season, eight coming from the penalty spot. He has converted 26 penalty kicks in his Premier League career, which puts him third all-time behind Alan Shearer (56) and Frank Lampard (43).
