The Detroit Red Wings raised another number to the rafters at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday night.

Former captain and top defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who spent his entire 20-year career with the Original 6 franchise, had his No. 5 retired in a pregame ceremony before Detroit played the rival Colorado Avalanche.

Lidstrom is considered by many one of the three best defensemen in NHL history. He won seven Norris trophies, a Conn Smythe Trophy and four Stanley Cup titles in his remarkable career. The Red Wings never missed the playoffs during Lidstrom’s time with the team.
