The depth and talent on the Anaheim Ducks’ blue line took a hit Wednesday when the team announced that defenseman Cam Fowler likely will miss the rest of the regular season with a sprained left MCL suffered last week.

The expected recovery time is 3 to 5 weeks.

Fowler’s injury comes at a bad time because the San Jose Sharks have taken advantage of the Ducks’ recent struggles to tie them atop the Pacific Division standings with 97 points entering Wednesday’s games.

Fowler, 22, has tallied 36 points in 67 games this season. His powerful shot, play-making skill and impressive skating ability will be missed on the Ducks’ power play, which already is struggling with just a 16 percent success rate.

Luckily for the Ducks, they got veteran blueliner Stephane Robidas back in the lineup Tuesday night following his four-month recovery from a broken leg. He was acquired from the Dallas Stars just before the NHL trade deadline earlier this month.
