One fan took himself out of Father of the Year contention with his actions at Monday’s New York Mets-Miami Marlins spring training tilt.
The trouble began when Mets outfielder Chris Young roped a ground-rule double into right field that hopped over the Tradition Field fence in Port St. Lucie, Fla. One fan’s fatherly instincts went out the window, with his Little League knowledge taking over instead. He kept his eye on the ball and chased after it, leaving his child — who was in a wagon — to roll helplessly down the hill.
A fellow fan beat the father to the souvenir, but fortunately, the dad reacted quickly enough, and he beat his son to the outfield wall, preventing an ugly crash.
