Italian soccer’s minor leagues never will be known as great bastions of sportsmanship, but two teams recently took steps to change that image.

A recent Serie D game between Fersina Perginese and Dro Calcio ended in a 3-3 draw because one team honored the spirit of sportsmanship or “fair play.”

A player on one team tried to return the ball to the opponents after one of his teammates suffered an injury. Astonishingly, the goalkeeper made a mess of the pass and conceded a goal.

However, the recipients of the good fortune did the right thing. They gave their opponents a free goal.

The game ended in a 3-3 draw.
