The Chicago Bears seriously bolstered their defense Wednesday by agreeing to terms with veteran defensive end Jared Allen.

Allen, a four-time All-Pro, replaces Julius Peppers, who signed with the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers earlier in free agency. Allen played for another NFC North rival, the Minnesota Vikings, for six years, and he has 128.5 sacks in 10 NFL seasons.

CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora tweeted details on the agreement, which came just after Bears coach Marc Trestman spoke at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla.

Allen, who reportedly wanted $10 million per year, was linked to the Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks before striking the deal with the Bears. He also was seen as a fit for the New England Patriots, who could use a veteran pass rusher but are running low on salary-cap space.
